Original Maine Flag

The original Maine flag (1901-1909) features two of Maine’s most well-known symbols: the White Pine (Maine’s state tree), and the North Star representing our state motto, Dirigo, which is Latin for “I direct.”

Over the years, there have been several calls to reinstate the original flag – which is unique among other state flags and easier to distinguish than the currently used state flag. In recognition of this growing movement, many Mainers are opting to fly the 1901 flag instead.
